Understanding Skin Needling

Skin Needling
in Brisbane

About Dr Asadi
I always tell my patients that skin needling is not one fixed treatment. It is a gentle signal to your skin, and the right answer depends on what your skin actually needs. The depth, the rhythm, the actives we add alongside it: those are choices we make together, never defaults.

Our approach to skin needling is led by depth, and never rushed. We look at the skin in front of you, the concern that brought you in, and the actives your skin can handle, before settling on any plan.

Skin Needling Indications

Concerns Commonly
Addressed

Skin needling is not one answer to one problem. It is a signal the skin reads differently, depending on the depth we choose. The first step is to be clear on the concern. That guides the right depth, the right rhythm, and the right actives to use alongside it.

Skin Quality
& Texture

This is the concern that brings most people in. Skin that feels rougher to the touch, looks a little duller in even light, and takes longer to settle back to smooth through the day. We look at the texture across the cheeks, temples and forehead, and weigh it against your skin type, your daily care, and years of sun.

Acne
Scarring

These are the marks left by past breakouts. Soft rolling dips across the cheeks, narrow deep marks (icepick scars) across the temples, and wider shallow ones (boxcar scars) along the jaw. Each type sits at a different depth and responds differently. We map the main pattern and the skin around it, and that guides the depth and rhythm of any plan. More on acne scarring.

Photoageing
& Sun Damage

The mark of years under the Queensland sun. Fine lines that stay even when your face is relaxed, a duller finish, and less of that clear light across the cheekbones and forehead.

Fine Lines
& Crepiness

The fine lines that show up first around the eyes, mouth and lower cheek, and the crepey, papery feel that comes with collagen loss. These are surface changes that often respond well to gentle collagen induction, especially alongside good sun protection and skincare that suits you.

Pigmentation
& Uneven Tone

Uneven colour and patchy tone, which often turn up alongside texture change. Skin needling, with carefully chosen brightening actives, can help with surface pigment and even out the complexion. Deeper pigment such as melasma needs a more careful approach. We look at the depth and what is triggering it before suggesting any plan. Related: pigmentation concerns.

Stretch
Marks

The lines that can follow fast growth, pregnancy, or weight change. Older white stretch marks respond more slowly than fresh red ones. We look at the colour, the depth, and the tone around them, so we can be honest about what to expect. More on stretch marks.

Treatment Journey

Sessions, Preparation
& Recovery

Skin needling is given as a course, shaped around your concern and your skin. Surface skin quality often settles in fewer sessions than set-in scarring or stretch marks. The notes below are a general guide. Your clinician at our Newstead clinic in Brisbane will tailor the schedule, the preparation and the recovery advice to your skin type, your medical history, the medicines you take and the area being treated.

Clinical Philosophy
Skin needling works because your skin reads the tiny channels as a signal to repair itself. So at a consultation, the real question I am asking is not whether that signal will fire. It is whether we have matched the depth to where your concern actually sits. That, more than anything, is what we decide together.

Other Treatments
We May Discuss

Some skin concerns respond best to one treatment. Others may need a more layered approach, where different treatments are used to support different parts of the concern.

The treatments listed here are examples of what may be considered. They are not a treatment plan and do not mean you will need all of them. Your recommendation may include one option, a combination, or a different approach altogether after your skin has been properly assessed at our Brisbane clinic.

Skin Needling Protocols

Foundation Skin Needling

The base treatment: medical-grade microneedling at a depth set for your concern and skin type. We apply a numbing cream for thirty to forty-five minutes first, then cleanse and prepare the skin, and work the device evenly across the area. Afterwards we settle the skin with soothing aftercare. On its own, this is often a good fit for general skin quality, fine surface lines, and the early stages of texture change. We usually talk about a course of three to four sessions, four to six weeks apart.

Deep Skin Needling for Scarring

A deeper treatment chosen for set-in acne scarring, stretch marks, and stubborn texture change. The extra depth reaches the dermis, the layer where the scarring sits, so the skin around it rebuilds alongside fresh collagen. Because deeper work takes longer to settle, we'll go through comfort, aftercare and recovery time in more detail before you decide. This is usually a course of four to eight sessions, four to six weeks apart, with the change building slowly over six to twelve months.

Skin Needling with Regenerative Actives

Skin Needling with PRP

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is made from a small sample of your own blood. We apply it across the tiny channels during and just after skin needling. PRP holds a concentrated mix of your body's own growth factors, and the channels let them reach the layers where the skin is already being asked to repair. It is often used for skin quality, fine lines, scarring, and hair density work. We'll usually plan the course around what your blood results show is realistic.

Skin Needling with Exosome Therapy

Exosomes are tiny packages that cells use to send signals to one another, and the skin reads them as instructions to repair. Applied across the channels made during skin needling, they reach the dermis, where the new collagen response is already building. They are often used for more involved skin quality plans, scarring, recovery after treatment, and combinations where deeper repair matters. We'll confirm whether they're a good fit for you, and which exosome product we'd use, when we meet.

Skin Needling with Polyrevitalising Mesotherapy Actives

Here we support the skin with mesotherapy actives delivered across the tiny channels during a skin needling session. These actives combine hyaluronic acid with a measured blend of vitamins, amino acids, minerals, antioxidants and nucleic acids, to feed the deeper skin alongside the collagen response that needling already sets off. We only settle on the mix, the actives, and how often you'd come in once we've seen your skin in person.

Skin Needling with Regenerative Serums

This pairs skin needling with a small, carefully chosen set of professional serums, matched to the concern in front of us: brightening blends for pigmentation, peptide blends to support collagen, and growth-factor blends for repair and recovery. The channels made during needling let these actives reach layers of skin that creams alone cannot. We'll choose the exact serum together, once we've had a proper look at your skin.

Combination & Adjacent Approaches

Skin Needling Sequenced With Skin Peels

For some concerns, especially pigmentation alongside texture change, we may plan medical-grade peels and skin needling in sequence over a cycle. This works on the skin from two angles. The peel lifts pigmented cells at the surface, the needling rebuilds the support layer underneath, and we space the two so your skin settles fully in between.

Signature Facial With Skin Needling

Our clinic's signature combination: skin needling at a gentle depth, paired with deep cleansing, hydrating and finishing steps for a calmer, more relaxing in-clinic visit. It is often a good fit for keeping skin in good shape once a concern has settled, or before an occasion where you want skin looking its best.

Laser Resurfacing Options

CO2 Laser Resurfacing

When the concern involves heavier texture change, acne scarring, enlarged pores, or collagen loss, CO2 Laser Resurfacing may be discussed alongside skin needling, or instead of it, where it is the better fit. Whether it's right for you comes down to your skin type, the concern, how much downtime you can take, and a proper medical check.

CoolPeel CO2 Laser

CoolPeel CO2 Laser is a lighter, surface-level option with less downtime, which can help if recovery time is a worry for you. We can talk it through for fine lines, skin texture, and overall skin quality, and check whether it's a good fit for you at your consultation.

Questions

Frequently
Asked

Skin needling uses a precise medical-grade microneedling device to make thousands of tiny channels through the top layers of the skin. Your skin reads these channels as a signal to repair itself. That switches on the collagen-building cells in the dermis (the layer just under the surface), which make fresh collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid over the next six to twelve weeks. Because there is no heat involved, skin needling suits most skin types when the depth, rhythm and aftercare are chosen with care.

Skin needling is often used for skin texture and quality, fine lines, photoageing, acne scarring, pigmentation and uneven tone, stretch marks, and early collagen loss. At adjusted depths, it can also support hair density on the scalp. The right use and depth are decided at your consultation, not from a fixed protocol.

Most skin concerns need a course of treatments rather than one session. Surface concerns like skin quality and tone often respond within three to four sessions. Acne scarring and stretch marks usually need four to eight sessions, four to six weeks apart. The change builds slowly as new collagen forms over six to twelve weeks. Individual results vary.

What you feel depends on the depth and on you. Most people describe medium-depth skin needling as a rough tingling rather than a sharp pain. We apply a numbing cream for thirty to forty-five minutes before we start, to keep you comfortable. If you tend to feel anxious about clinical procedures, or you do not cope well with pain, please tell us at your consultation so we can plan around it.

One of the strengths of skin needling is that it uses no heat or light, which makes it kinder to olive and darker skin tones than many laser treatments. Even so, we still tailor the depth and the aftercare, because pushing too hard on inflamed or recently sun-exposed skin can leave dark marks behind (post-inflammatory pigmentation). Whether it suits you depends on your own skin, and that is decided at a consultation.

Yes. The tiny channels made during skin needling let regenerative actives reach the deeper layers of skin far better than creams alone. Common pairings include platelet-rich plasma from your own blood, exosome therapy, and polyrevitalising mesotherapy actives. Which pairing, if any, suits your skin is decided at your consultation, along with the right depth and rhythm of sessions.

Skin needling is usually well tolerated, but like any skin treatment it carries some risk. For the first few days, most people have redness, mild swelling, dryness and some flaking, a bit like mild sunburn. Pinpoint bleeding and light bruising are common at the time of treatment. Less often, there can be infection, a cold sore flare if you are prone to them, a breakout, or milia (tiny white bumps). Going too deep, or treating inflamed or recently sun-exposed skin, can leave darker marks behind (post-inflammatory pigmentation), which is more of a risk for olive and darker skin tones. Scarring is rare, and usually linked to overly aggressive treatment. Choosing the right depth, looking after the skin afterwards, and protecting it from the sun all lower these risks. We explain the risks that apply to your skin in full at your consultation and again on the day. You can read more on our Risks & Complications page.
