Skin & Acne

Acne & Skin InflammationNewstead, Brisbane

Body Dezign House is a doctor-led clinic in Newstead, Brisbane. Acne is not just a teenage problem. It affects up to 15 percent of adults, most often women, and often turns up for the first time between the late twenties and the early forties. The spots along the jawline and chin, the deep painful cysts that flare with stress, the stubborn breakouts on the back and chest, the marks and indents left behind, are all part of the same long-term condition. Here is the most important thing to know. The longer acne stays inflamed and untreated, the higher the chance of permanent scarring. Getting it under control early matters more than any single device. At Body Dezign House in Newstead, every consultation is guided by your anatomy, looks at your whole skin, and carries no obligation to go ahead. Every patient we see in Brisbane is looked at the same way, with the same time and care.

Understanding Acne

Acne
in Brisbane

About Dr Asadi
The biggest predictor of permanent acne scarring is how long it takes to get the inflammation under control. Devices and procedures matter less than starting early, sticking with it, and bringing in the right specialist when the standard plan is not enough. The people who do best are the ones who treat acne as seriously as they would any other long-term skin condition.

Our approach is careful and honest. We look at what is really driving your concern. It might be excess oil, blocked pores, acne-causing bacteria, inflammation, a hormonal cause, or a mix of these. We also look at whether any treatment is genuinely right for you.

Acne Assessment

Types of Acne
Commonly Assessed

Acne is not one thing. It shows up in different forms, at different depths, on different parts of the body, and the form decides what will help. Some types settle with skincare alone. Some need in-clinic treatments. Some need a specialist dermatologist. Working out which is which is what the assessment is for. We assess and treat the full range of acne in Newstead, across Brisbane’s inner north. Wherever you are in Brisbane, the first step is a proper look at your skin in our Newstead rooms.

Most Commonly Assessed

Comedonal
Acne

The earliest form: blackheads and whiteheads. Blackheads reach the surface and look dark because the trapped oil reacts with air, not because the skin is dirty. Whiteheads stay under the surface as small, skin-coloured bumps. Most common on the forehead, nose and chin. It responds well to a skin-renewing topical cream and gentle exfoliating peels. The aim is to clear them before they turn inflamed.

Inflammatory
Red & Pus-Filled Spots

Small red inflamed bumps, and the ones topped with pus, are what most people picture as acne. They form when a blocked follicle becomes inflamed. This is the stage where marks and scarring can start, so we treat it more actively. A mix of topicals, peels, AviClear and Healite II LED often works well here.

Cystic
& Nodular Acne

Deep, painful, hard or fluid-filled lumps under the surface. These scar unless they are controlled early. This is the form most likely to need a specialist dermatologist.

Hormonal
Adult Acne

The familiar adult pattern, more common in women: deep, sometimes painful breakouts along the jawline, chin and lower face, often coming and going with the menstrual cycle. Common triggers are coming off hormonal contraception, polycystic ovary syndrome, perimenopause, and stress. It responds well to hormonal treatment under your GP or specialist, and to AviClear. That treatment helps in around three out of four cases, but takes two to three months to settle in.

Body Acne
& Acne Scarring

Around half of all acne patients also get it below the neck. The face is the most common site, but the chest, upper back, shoulders and upper arms come next, because these areas have plenty of oil glands. Body acne is usually harder to treat than facial acne: the skin is thicker, the spots sit deeper, and the body is easy to miss in daily skincare. Severe forms (where inflamed spots join up under the skin and form tunnels) need specialist dermatology care. The scars left behind (boxcar, ice pick and rolling scars, plus the brown and red marks left behind by inflammation (pigmentation and redness)) are treated separately on our acne scarring page, and only once active acne is under control. Morpheus 8 and Vivace RF microneedling are the mainstays for indented scars; topicals and peels handle the pigmentation.

Fungal
Acne

A yeast-driven look-alike, not true acne. It looks like even, itchy little bumps, mostly on the chest, back and shoulders. It needs an antifungal treatment, not an antibacterial one.

Clinical Philosophy
Acne is never just a cosmetic concern. Every person’s skin behaves differently, which is why I think understanding the cause matters just as much as treating the visible signs. Good outcomes come from a careful assessment, honest expectations, and a plan built around you.

Treatments We
May Discuss

The treatments listed here are examples of what may be considered. They are not a treatment plan and do not mean you will need all of them. Your recommendation may include one option, a combination, or a different approach altogether after your skin has been properly assessed at our Brisbane clinic.

Daily Skincare & Topical Treatments

Skincare Plan & Topical Treatments

This is the cornerstone of every acne plan, and the part that holds control long term. A skin-renewing topical cream is the anchor of an adult routine. It works by settling the way skin cells shed inside the follicle, which stops the blockages that start the whole cycle. Around it, we usually add a gentle non-foaming cleanser, a product to calm inflammation, an antibacterial wash (used as a wash rather than a leave-on, to limit dryness), a gentle exfoliating product for blackheads, and a light, non-comedogenic SPF 50+ to protect against marks. Where medical treatment is needed for more stubborn or hormonal acne, we coordinate it with your GP.

Targeted Laser for Active Acne

AviClear Laser

AviClear uses a 1726nm wavelength that is taken up by the oil your glands make. The energy heats and shrinks the oil glands themselves, so they make less oil, while contact cooling protects the skin around them.

Resurfacing & Decongesting

Skin Peels

A graduated range of medical-grade peels. During active acne, we lean toward oil-soluble peels and resurfacing peels. An oil-soluble peel can get into the follicle and clear the blockage from inside, and it calms red, inflamed spots. A resurfacing peel works on the top layers, brightens the marks left behind, and smooths texture between active spots. Stronger peels come in once the skin is settled. In acne, regular, moderate peels work better than a few harsh ones. The right peel is very individual and is decided at your consultation.

LED & Light-Based Adjuncts

Healite II LED

Low-level light therapy using two wavelengths. The red light (630nm) calms inflammation in active acne and helps the skin heal. The near-infrared light (830nm) reaches deeper, soothing the skin after peels, microneedling or laser and supporting repair. Because it does not use heat, Healite II does not stir up inflammation, so it is useful both during active acne and after treatments. We often add it alongside AviClear sessions, and as a calming step after Morpheus 8 or Vivace.

RF Microneedling for Acne Scarring

Morpheus 8

Radiofrequency microneedling. Fine, gold-coated channels deliver controlled RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin, at depths you can adjust up to 4mm. The mix of microneedling and gentle heat breaks down old, disorganised scar collagen and prompts the skin’s collagen-making cells to lay down newer, healthier collagen in its place. It is especially useful for indented acne scars (the boxcar and rolling dips left by deep inflammatory acne). Because the energy is not taken up by skin pigment, Morpheus 8 suits deeper skin tones, where laser resurfacing would carry more risk of marks. A typical course is three to six sessions, and the collagen keeps improving for six to twelve months after the last one. We use it only once active acne is under control.

Vivace RF Microneedling

Another RF microneedling platform, using 36 gold-plated channels with precise depth control and pulsed energy designed to feel more comfortable. It works the same way as Morpheus 8 (microneedling channels plus RF heating to build new collagen), with a slightly different channel and energy profile. Some indented scar patterns respond better to one platform than the other. The choice between Morpheus 8 and Vivace comes down to the scar type, your skin thickness, and your clinician’s judgment after seeing the scars in person. Like Morpheus 8, we use it only once active acne is controlled.

Laser Resurfacing for Acne Scarring

CO2 Laser Resurfacing

A fractional CO2 laser makes tiny, controlled channels in the skin, which prompts collagen to rebuild and helps with indented acne scars, large pores, and rough texture. CO2 Laser Resurfacing may suit acne scarring where it is clinically right, and once active acne is fully under control. Whether it suits you depends on your skin type, scar pattern, how much downtime you can take, and a medical assessment. We check suitability at your consultation.

CoolPeel CO2 Laser

CoolPeel CO2 Laser is a lighter resurfacing option with less social downtime, and may suit people for whom recovery time matters. It works on texture, large pores, and mild marks without the longer recovery of fuller resurfacing. We check suitability at your consultation.

When Specialist Care Is Needed

Dermatologist Referral & Specialist Care

Some acne is too severe, too scarring, or too stubborn to manage with procedures. In those cases, the right next step is a specialist dermatologist.

Skincare We Stock

Universkin Le Gel Exfoliating Foaming Gel Cleanser

An exfoliating gel cleanser we stock, often discussed for skin prone to congestion and visible pores.

Dermaceutic Foamer 15 Intense Exfoliating Foam

A stronger exfoliating foam we stock, often discussed for skin prone to congestion and visible pores.

ZO Skin Health Retinol + Blemish Complex

A retinol blemish complex we stock, dispensed after a skin consultation, for skin that looks congested.

All cosmetic procedures carry some risk and possible side effects. With acne, treatment is staged: active acne is settled first, and resurfacing or scar treatment follows once the inflammation has calmed. Whether a treatment suits you, what might rule it out, and the full range of possible complications are all discussed at your consultation. Individual results vary, and no outcome can be guaranteed. Questions

Frequently
Asked

In adults, acne usually has more than one cause at the same time. Four things are always involved: too much oil from the glands, skin cells shedding in a way that blocks the follicle, an overgrowth of the bacteria that live on the skin, and inflammation. On top of that, the common drivers in adults are your genes, your hormones, stress, and some medicines. In women, hormonal shifts around the menstrual cycle, coming off hormonal contraception, polycystic ovary syndrome, and perimenopause are frequent triggers. In men, stress, some supplements, and sometimes hormone therapy can flare it. Diet plays a smaller but real part, mainly high-glycaemic foods and dairy in some people. Adult acne affects up to around 15 percent of people.

Acne can usually be controlled until it is no longer visible, but the underlying tendency does not go away. Most people reach a steady, manageable state with a mix of good skincare, sometimes a course of treatment from their GP or dermatologist, and in-clinic treatments. The single biggest thing that decides whether you scar is how long it takes to get acne under control. Treating it early and consistently matters more than the exact device used. Individual results vary.

If your acne does not respond to AviClear and other in-clinic treatment, the right next step is a referral to a specialist dermatologist.

Yes, in some people. The strongest evidence is for high-glycaemic foods (white bread, sugary drinks, sweets) and skim milk, which can both make acne worse in those who are prone to it. The link with whole milk and chocolate is weaker. Diet is rarely the whole story, but trying lower-glycaemic eating for eight to twelve weeks alongside your skincare is a reasonable thing to do. If diet is doing a lot of the work, you will notice.

AviClear works on the skin's oil glands, gradually reducing how much oil they make over about 9 to 12 months. A standard course is three sessions. Some people need a fourth session at around 4 to 6 months, and some have a yearly maintenance session after that. Individual results vary.

Yes. We offer a range of treatments, from CO2 laser resurfacing to chemical peels, which we discuss at your consultation.

All cosmetic procedures carry risk, including bruising, swelling, unevenness, infection, problems with blood vessels, and an outcome you are not happy with. The exact risks depend on the treatment, and we explain them in full at your consultation and again on the day. There is more on our Risks & Complications page.
