What Is IV Nutrient Therapy

IV Nutrient Therapy in Brisbane

About Dr Asadi
Honestly, the treatment is the last thing I think about. First I want to know you. Your health, what you take, what you live with, and whether the thing you have come in for is even the right thing for you. We have that conversation first. Every time.
Dr Fatemeh Asadi, MD, FRACGP
IV Nutrient Therapy at Body Dezign House Newstead, Brisbane

Our approach is careful and honest. We look at what is really driving your concern. It might be a dietary or absorption issue, a hormonal or thyroid cause, a medicine you take, or a mix of these. We also look at whether any treatment is genuinely right for you.

Why Consultation Matters

What We
Assess

No two people are the same, so the consultation at our Brisbane clinic does a fair bit of work. It is where we get to know the things that really change the picture: your health, your history, and whether IV therapy is a sensible idea for you at all. Here is what we look at.

Assessed at Every Consultation

Medical History

We start with your medical background. Past and present diagnoses, any IV therapy you have had before, operations, your general health. We take a closer look at anything to do with the kidneys, heart or circulation, because those are the things most likely to change whether IV therapy is safe for you. The more open you can be, the safer we can be.

Current Medications

Some medicines simply do not sit well with IV therapy. Water tablets, blood pressure medicines, blood thinners, even a few supplements can change how it is handled. So please bring everything you take, including the over-the-counter bits and pieces. It is the dull little details that often matter most for keeping you safe.

Lifestyle Factors

We will ask about the everyday things too: how you eat, how much water you drink, how active you are, how much you drink. None of it is a test. It just fills in the picture and lets us talk honestly about whether IV therapy fits in with the rest of your life.

Health Goals

It helps to know what you are actually hoping for. We will be straight with you about what IV therapy can and cannot do, and whether what you have in mind is realistic. And if it is not the right thing for you, or something else would serve you better, we will say so.

Risk Assessment

Every IV therapy carries some risk. Bruising, irritation of the vein, infection, an allergic reaction, and, rarely, more fluid than the body can comfortably handle. We weigh up your own picture: your allergies, how your veins are to work with, any reaction you have had before, and the risks of what we are talking about. We go through all of it before anything happens, and you can say no at any point. There is more on our Risks & Complications page.

Suitability Review

In the end, this is what the consultation is for. Not everyone is a candidate, and if that turns out to be you, we will say so kindly and clearly. If it is a good fit, we map out a plan made for you and write it down together. This is something we decide in the room with you, face to face.

Clinical Philosophy
I would always rather be guided by what I actually find than by what I assume. When you sit down with me, I am looking at the whole person, not just the thing you came in for. I weigh each part on its own, and I stay honest about what is right for you, and what is not.

The Experience

Your Consultation
in Brisbane

Your consultation at our Brisbane clinic starts with a conversation about your concerns and what you would like to achieve. We review your medical history, carefully assess your suitability for IV nutrient therapy, and consider the medicines you take, your allergies and your general health to understand whether treatment is right for you. We then explain our findings, discuss the treatment options that may be suitable for you, and answer your questions so you have a clear understanding of the benefits, possible risks, and alternatives, so you can make a decision without feeling rushed. Important Considerations

Who May Not
Be Suitable

IV nutrient therapy is not right for everyone, and that is worth saying plainly. Below are some of the things that can make it unwise, and the kinds of things we look at when we meet. It is not a complete list, and nothing here replaces a proper look in person.

Medical Conditions

Pre-existing Medical Conditions

Certain health conditions change the picture, or mean a plan has to be adjusted. Kidney disease, heart conditions and heart failure are the big ones. So are problems with the body's salt and mineral balance, a condition called G6PD deficiency, and anything else that affects how your body copes with fluids given into a vein. If your history is involved, a short summary from your GP or specialist is a real help.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Pregnancy changes things. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or hoping to be, please tell us before you book, so we can talk it through properly first. We will not go ahead with IV therapy in pregnancy without a proper medical review. It is simply not worth the risk.

Known Allergies & Sensitivities

Allergies and Sensitivities

If you have allergies, tell us before anything goes ahead. And if you have ever had a strong reaction to something given into a vein, that is exactly the kind of thing we want to hear about, in detail. We will go through your history carefully before we ever suggest treatment.

When Referral is More Appropriate

Referral to Another Provider

Sometimes the right answer is a different kind of care altogether. If what you have come in with would be better looked into by a GP or specialist, we will point you there instead of pressing on with IV therapy. It does not happen often, but when it does, it is the honest thing to do. Your wellbeing comes before any service we offer.

All IV nutrient therapy carries some risk and possible side effects. Whether it suits you, what might rule it out, and the full range of possible complications are all discussed at your consultation. Individual results vary; no outcome can be guaranteed. Read about Risks & Complications →

Informed Consent

Risks & Complications

Like anything given into a vein, IV therapy carries risk, and you deserve to hear about it straight. We go through the possible complications in full when we meet, and again before any treatment. What follows is an overview rather than the whole story. The risks that matter for you will depend on your health and what is being considered.

Common Risks

Bruising

Bruising at or around the spot where the tube goes in is common and usually clears within a few days. If you take blood thinners or have a clotting condition, bruising can be more noticeable. We talk this through at your consultation.

Discomfort

Some people feel mild discomfort, or a cool or pressing feeling at the site while it is going in. This usually settles once it is finished. If it bothers you, we can slow the drip down or stop it.

Swelling

A little swelling at or around the site can happen and is usually short-lived. Swelling there can sometimes mean fluid is leaking into the tissue around the vein rather than staying in it, so it needs to be checked promptly.

Vein Irritation

An infusion can sometimes mildly irritate the vein it goes into. You might feel this as warmth or tenderness along the vein during or after the drip. Slowing the rate down a little can help reduce this.

Less Common Risks

Infection

Infection at the site, or in the vein itself (called phlebitis), is uncommon but possible. We keep everything sterile while placing the tube and during the infusion. If you notice redness, warmth, any discharge, or a fever, let us know straight away.

Allergic Reactions

An allergic reaction to something given during IV therapy can happen. Reactions range from mild, like flushing or itching, to severe, like anaphylaxis. We go through your allergy history at the consultation. If you have had a serious allergic reaction before, we assess you carefully before going ahead.

Fluid Overload

If you have a heart or kidney condition, your body may not cope well with the extra fluid given into a vein. This is one of the main reasons a medical consultation is needed first. People with these conditions may not be suitable for IV nutrient therapy.

Unsatisfactory Outcome

Not everyone responds to IV nutrient therapy the same way. We do not make health claims about it, and no particular result is promised. Individual results vary.

Risks vary with your own health and what is involved, and we talk through them in full at your consultation and again before treatment. There is more on our Risks & Complications page. Individual results vary.

Questions

Frequently
Asked

Put simply, it delivers nutrients into a vein through a small tube, usually in the arm. You'll notice we don't publish set formulas or contents, and that's deliberate. What's involved, and whether it's a sensible idea for you, is something we work out together in person. We don't make health claims about IV nutrient therapy.

Yes, always. Before any IV therapy at Body Dezign House, we sit down together and go through your medical history, the medicines you take, and anything that might get in the way. It's not a step we're willing to skip. Some people are a good fit and some aren't, and we'd much rather know that first.

Usually 30 to 45 minutes for a first visit. That's enough time to go through your history, talk properly about your health, and work out together whether IV therapy makes sense for you. If it does, and you're happy to go ahead, treatment happens at a later appointment.

No, and we'd never pretend otherwise. Some health conditions, some medicines and some personal circumstances change the picture, or rule it out altogether. Kidney disease, heart conditions, certain sensitivities or a complicated history all need a careful look first. It's the kind of call we can only make properly in person. Individual results vary.

Pregnancy changes things. If you're pregnant or hoping to be, please tell us before you book, so we can talk it through properly. We won't go ahead during pregnancy without a proper medical review. It simply isn't worth the risk. Individual results vary.

There's no set schedule, and anyone who hands you one without seeing you first is guessing. How often, if at all, depends on you and what we discuss when we meet. We won't put a number on it without a proper consultation. Individual results vary.

IV nutrient therapy carries risks, and you deserve to hear them plainly. They include bruising where the tube goes in, some discomfort while it's going in, swelling, irritation of the vein, infection, allergic reactions and, rarely, too much fluid or an imbalance in the body's fluids and salts. We talk through the risks in full at your consultation, and again before treatment. Which ones matter for you depends on your own health and what's involved.
