Lip Lines & Perioral WrinklesNewstead, Brisbane

Body Dezign House is a doctor-led clinic in Newstead, Brisbane. The lips and the skin directly around them carry expression and softness, and they tend to show fine vertical lines earlier than the rest of the face. Every consultation here is guided by your anatomy, considers the lips and surrounding skin together, and comes with no obligation to go ahead.

Understanding Lip Lines

Lip Lines
in Brisbane

About Dr Asadi
Lip lines are not a single problem with a single answer. They are a combination of skin thinning, muscle behaviour, lip border softening, and gradual collagen loss, and each of those layers calls for a different response. A considered consultation reads them apart, and is honest about which can be improved and which sit closer to a surgical question.

Her approach to the area around your mouth is led by anatomy, and never rushed. She reads the lip, the lip border, the surrounding skin, and the muscle underneath as separate things before any option is discussed. And if a surgical opinion would serve you better, she will say so plainly.

Lip Line Assessment

Areas Commonly
Assessed

Lip lines can come from several things at once. It might be the quality and texture of the skin, how active the muscle is, how well the lip border holds its shape, or the support in the tissue around the mouth. Often it is a mix of these.

Most Commonly Assessed

Vertical Lip Lines
& Perioral Wrinkles

These are the fine vertical creases that fan out from the lip border, and they are the most recognisable kind of lip line. We look at how many there are, how deep they sit, and whether they show when your face is at rest or only when you move your mouth. We also check whether the skin around them has changed in texture. Upper and lower lip lines often develop differently, so we read them separately.

Vermilion Border
Definition

The vermilion border is the crisp edge where the coloured part of your lip meets the surrounding skin. With age it softens, the cupid's bow flattens, and lipstick can travel beyond the line. We look at how defined this edge still is and how it sits within your overall lip shape.

Skin Quality
& Texture

The skin around the mouth is thinner and ages faster than the rest of the face. We look at its texture, any fine crepiness, how well it holds moisture, and the overall quality of the collagen underneath.

Orbicularis Oris
Muscle Activity

The orbicularis oris is the ring of muscle that closes and purses your mouth. It tightens every time you speak, sip, or make an expression, and that constant movement is a major reason vertical lip lines form. We look at how active this muscle is and how much it shapes the lines when your face is at rest.

Age-Related
Perioral Changes

With age, collagen slowly reduces, the skin thins, and the bone and fat underneath change too. The lip body rolls inward, the cupid's bow flattens, the gap between the nose and the lip lengthens, and fine lines that once appeared only with movement can settle in and stay. These changes often build on whatever your face naturally tends towards, and we assess them as part of the whole picture around the mouth.

Sun &
Lifestyle Factors

Sun exposure, smoking, vaping, and repeated pursing of the lips all speed up how quickly these lines form, and Brisbane's climate is a real factor here. We look at the everyday habits that can be adjusted alongside any treatment.

Clinical Philosophy
Lipstick now travels where it once stayed inside. What reads as a vertical line above the lip is usually three things at once: collagen thinning in already-thin skin, a busy mouth muscle, and a softening lip border. A good consultation reads each layer separately, and is honest about which can be improved without surgery and which sit closer to a resurfacing or lip-lift question.

Options

Approaches

Treatments We
May Discuss

The treatments listed here are examples of what may be considered. They are not a treatment plan and do not mean you will need all of them. Your recommendation may include one option, a combination, or a different approach altogether after your skin has been properly assessed at our Brisbane clinic.

Skin Boosters

Skin Boosters

Skin booster treatments that support skin hydration, dermal quality, and gradual collagen building in the perioral area. Particularly relevant where the skin around the mouth has thinned and lost elasticity. Whether this approach suits your skin and which protocol fits your individual anatomy is decided only at a full consultation.

Regenerative Treatments

Rejuran

A regenerative skin treatment using polynucleotides delivered into the dermis to support skin quality, hydration, and collagen activity around the mouth. May be worth discussing for fine perioral lines, thinning lip skin, and overall textural improvement of the upper and lower lip area.

PRP

Platelet-rich plasma drawn from your own blood and applied to support skin regeneration, fibroblast activity, and collagen production around the mouth. Relevant for clients seeking a regenerative approach that uses their own biology rather than introduced material.

Exosome Therapy

Cell-derived messengers that support skin regeneration and dermal quality, often used to enhance recovery and outcomes alongside skin needling, laser, or radiofrequency microneedling in the perioral area.

Volume Support & Lip Definition

Lip Definition & Volume Support

The lip border and lip body can be supported with treatments that gently restore vermilion definition, philtral column shape, and the cupid's bow. Subtle, anatomy-led support of the lip outline can soften the appearance of fine vertical lip lines by addressing the structure underneath them. Whether this is appropriate for your individual anatomy is decided only at a full consultation.

Wrinkle Treatment

For dynamic lip lines driven by the muscles around the mouth, we may discuss a treatment to balance the activity of these muscles and gently lower it. The aim is to preserve natural movement of the mouth, not to restrict expression. Whether this approach is suitable for you is decided only at your consultation.

Skin Tightening & Radiofrequency

Morpheus8

Combines radiofrequency energy with microneedling to support deeper tissue remodelling and dermal collagen building in the perioral area. May be worth discussing for fine vertical lip lines, perioral skin laxity, and overall textural improvement of the upper and lower lip skin, available to Brisbane clients.

Vivace RF Microneedling

Radiofrequency microneedling that supports collagen and elastin production in the dermis. Relevant for clients with fine perioral wrinkles, crepey upper lip skin, or early lip border softening who prefer a treatment series with gradual, accumulating effect.

Ultherapy

Focused ultrasound targeting deeper tissue layers to support and tighten the lower face skin, including the perioral region. May be relevant where overall lower face laxity contributes to how lip lines present.

Laser & Light

Laser Genesis

Non-ablative laser that gently supports collagen activity and skin quality with minimal downtime. May be worth discussing for early perioral lines, redness around the mouth, and overall skin tone improvement as part of a longer-term Brisbane treatment plan.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing

CO2 Laser Resurfacing may be suitable for perioral fine lines and lip line concerns where skin quality and surface texture are part of the picture, where clinically appropriate. Treatment suitability depends on skin type, concern, downtime preference, and medical assessment.

CoolPeel CO2 Laser

CoolPeel CO2 Laser offers a superficial resurfacing option with lower social downtime, and may be suitable for clients where recovery time is a consideration. It can be discussed during consultation for fine perioral lines and surface texture concerns. Suitability is assessed during consultation.

Healite II

LED phototherapy that supports cellular activity, healing, and skin quality. Often used alongside other treatments to support recovery and as a gentle adjunct in a broader perioral plan at our Newstead clinic.

Skin Treatments

Skin Needling

Controlled micro-injury to the dermis that triggers the skin's natural wound-healing response and supports collagen formation. May be relevant for fine vertical lip lines and overall textural concerns in the perioral skin.

Skin Peels

Medical-grade chemical peels matched to your skin type to support cell turnover, surface texture, and skin quality. The perioral area is often treated as part of a full-face or focused upper-lip protocol at our Newstead, Brisbane clinic.

PRX-Plus

A no-downtime bio-revitalising treatment that supports skin firmness, hydration, and quality without surface peeling. Available at our Newstead clinic for clients who want to start improving perioral skin quality without taking time off.

Tissue Support & Lifting

Aptos Thread Lifts

Minimally invasive lifting using fine, barbed threads to support the perioral and lower face tissue, sometimes used where lip line concerns sit alongside softening of the wider lower face.

All cosmetic procedures carry some risk and possible side effects. Whether a treatment suits you, what might rule it out, and the full range of possible complications are all discussed at your consultation. Individual results vary, and no outcome can be guaranteed. Questions

Frequently
Asked

Lip lines develop in non-smokers too. The skin around your mouth is thinner than the rest of your face. The ring of muscle around your mouth moves thousands of times a day as you talk and make expressions. And your collagen slowly reduces from your twenties onward. Sun exposure, genetics, and repeated pursing can all bring these lines on earlier. We discuss all of these factors at our Newstead, Brisbane clinic.

Lip lines, sometimes called perioral lines or smoker's lines, are the fine vertical creases that radiate outward from the lip border. Smile lines, also known as nasolabial folds, curve diagonally from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth. They have different anatomical origins and are assessed separately. Both can be discussed at our Newstead, Brisbane clinic.

Laser resurfacing is one of the in-clinic options that may be discussed for perioral lines. It works on the skin around the mouth to support skin quality, texture, and collagen, and it can be considered on its own or alongside other approaches. Deeper, established static lines or significant lip skin laxity may be better assessed for a surgical opinion, such as a lip lift. Whether laser resurfacing is suitable for you is decided at a consultation.

Longevity depends on the approach. Collagen-stimulating treatments typically build gradually and may persist for many months to over a year as new tissue forms. Skin treatments and laser results often improve over a series and require maintenance. Your clinician at Body Dezign House in Newstead will discuss expected longevity at consultation, based on the approach recommended for your skin. Individual results vary.

Most people begin to notice fine vertical lip lines from their late thirties or early forties, although they can appear earlier with significant sun exposure, smoking, or strong family history. Around the lips, collagen reduces by roughly one percent each year from your twenties, so subtle thinning of the lip border and softening of the cupid's bow can show before deeper lines develop. This is a pattern we see regularly at our Newstead, Brisbane clinic.

In suitable patients, perioral lines are often assessed together with overall lip shape, vermilion border definition, and the philtrum, because these structures all change together with age. Treatment planning considers the lips and surrounding skin as one unit, rather than treating lines in isolation. The approach is decided at your consultation at our Brisbane clinic.

All cosmetic procedures carry risks, including bruising, swelling, asymmetry, infection, vascular events, and unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome. Specific risks depend on the treatment and are explained in full at consultation and again on the day of treatment. Full information is available on our Risks & Complications page.
