Jawline & Lower Face ContourNewstead, Brisbane
Body Dezign House is a doctor-led clinic in Newstead, Brisbane. Your jawline shapes how the lower face looks, both straight on and in profile. Every consultation here looks at the whole lower face, is guided by your own anatomy, and comes with no obligation to go ahead.
Jawline Concerns
in Brisbane
Your jawline is the edge of your lower face. It is made up of the lower edge of the jawbone, plus the muscle, ligaments, fat, and skin that sit over it. When we assess it, we look at how clearly that edge shows, from the corner of the jaw down to the chin and into the front of the neck. When all of those layers are working together, the jawline looks clean and the lower face sits in balance. When one of them changes, whether it is bone, fat, ligament, muscle, or skin, the line softens. Nearby features can look different too, even when they have not changed at all.
Jawline concerns usually come from one of two places. The first is structural, which means the jaw you were born with. The jawbone, the chewing muscle along the jaw angle, and the fat over the top all vary a lot from person to person. Most people describe this in everyday words: a soft or weak jawline, a square or wide jaw, or a lower face that has never had a clean edge. The medical names are mandibular hypoplasia (an underdeveloped jaw) and masseter hypertrophy (an enlarged chewing muscle). Most people sit somewhere in between.
The second is change over time. The bone at the jaw angle slowly wears down. The ligaments that hold everything in place loosen. Fat slips down over the jaw border, and the skin loses some of its firmness. For most people, the first thing they notice is a little softening along the jaw and the start of jowls. These changes often go hand in hand with broader facial volume loss in the lower face. That is one reason interest in cosmetic medicine for the jawline has grown so much in the past decade. The most useful approaches tend to work deeper, at the bone and ligament level, not only at the surface.
Men's and women's jaws are built differently. A man's jaw usually has a sharper angle at the back, sits wider across the sides, and looks squarer overall. A woman's jaw tends to be narrower, with softer angles and a gentler taper toward the chin. This matters, because the same change can look quite different from one face to the next. A good assessment treats each face on its own terms, not off a single template.
Our Newstead clinic in Brisbane serves clients from New Farm, Teneriffe, Fortitude Valley, Hamilton, Ascot, Woolloongabba, South Brisbane, Paddington, and across greater Brisbane. We are located at 104 Breakfast Creek Road, Newstead, easily reached from the Brisbane inner city and inner north.
The jawline is not a single line. It is where bone, fat, muscle, ligament, and skin all meet. Each one ages on its own timeline. Reading a jawline well means reading all of them together, as part of the whole lower face. That is where any honest conversation about options begins.Dr Fatemeh Asadi, MD, FRACGP
Dr Fatemeh Asadi, MD, FRACGP brings two decades in cosmetic medicine and general practice to every consultation. She is a Key Opinion Leader for Merz Aesthetics and an Official Trainer for Aptos Threads. Our approach to the jawline is careful and unhurried. We look at what is actually changing across bone, fat, ligaments, muscle, and skin. We consider what your anatomy will and will not allow, and whether a cosmetic medicine option makes sense for you. Where it does not, we will tell you plainly, and the honest answer is a referral.
Areas Commonly
Assessed
At Body Dezign House in Newstead, Brisbane, we assess the jawline across every layer of the lower face: bone, fat, muscle, ligament, and skin. Most people have changes in more than one.
The Jawline Edge
& Definition
The lower edge of the jawbone is what gives the lower face its defined line. How clearly it shows depends on the shape of the bone underneath, the fat sitting over it, and how firm the skin is across it. We assess all three together, not just the surface.
The Jaw Angle
& Jaw Shape
The jaw angle, sometimes called the gonial angle, is the corner where the lower jaw turns up toward the ear. It is a big part of whether the lower face looks square, oval, or tapered. It differs a lot between men and women, and it softens slowly with age as the bone thins. We assess both your natural shape and any age-related change.
Masseter Muscle
& Lower Face Width
The masseter muscles are the chewing muscles that sit over the angle of the jaw. They add width to the sides of the lower face. Regular clenching or grinding can make them noticeably bigger. We assess how much they add to your jaw shape, alongside the bone and soft tissue.
Jowls
& Lower Face Heaviness
Jowls form when the ligaments that hold the jaw border in place start to weaken, and fat from above slips down over the jawline. The clean edge is lost. We look at where that soft tissue is sitting now, how much loose skin (skin laxity) is adding to it, and whether the bone underneath still gives enough support.
Under the Chin
& the Jaw-Neck Angle
The angle between the underside of the jaw and the front of the neck, called the cervico-mental angle, is one of the clearest signs of a defined jaw. A sharp angle looks crisp and defined. A soft or blurred one looks full or heavy. We look at the fat under the chin, the small bone high in the neck (the hyoid), the flat sheet of muscle in the neck (the platysma), and the skin around the angle. We assess all of it as part of the whole lower face.
Skin Quality
Along the Jaw
The firmness, texture, and stretch of the skin along the jawline matter in their own right, so we assess them on their own. Skin that has lost its elastic support tends to settle along the jaw border. That softens the line even when the bone and fat have not changed.
Most people first notice their jawline softening in their thirties or forties, and it almost never comes down to one thing. The bone wears down a little, fat shifts, the muscle changes, the skin loses its stretch, and the ligaments that once held everything in place slowly let go. My job in a consultation is to work out which of these is really driving the change, because that is what tells us what is actually worth doing.Dr Fatemeh Asadi MD, FRACGP · GP & Cosmetic Physician
Your Consultation
in Brisbane
Your consultation at our Brisbane clinic starts with a conversation about your concerns and what you would like to achieve. We review your medical history, carefully assess the jawline and lower face, and use VISIA skin analysis where appropriate to gain a better understanding of your skin's condition. We then explain our findings, discuss the treatment options that may be suitable for you, and answer your questions so you have a clear understanding of the benefits, possible risks, and alternatives before deciding whether to proceed. Listening
We start with a private, relaxed conversation. You tell us what you have noticed and what matters to you. Then we go through your medical history. We ask about past cosmetic treatments, any earlier surgery to the face or neck, any medications you take, allergies, teeth grinding or jaw clenching, and your general health. We also gently ask how you feel about your appearance, so that anything we discuss is truly in your interest.
Assessment
We assess the jawline and the lower face around it. We look at the shape and angle of the jawbone, and at where the fat sits and how much there is. We check how active the chewing muscle (the masseter) is, how firm the skin feels, and the angle from the jaw into the neck. To help, we use VISIA imaging, which uses AI to show fine detail the eye alone can miss: small changes in volume, hidden pigmentation, surface texture, and the exact shape of your lower face. You see what we see.
Options
After the assessment, we talk you through the options that suit you. These might include medical treatments, clinical devices, or thread lifts. Sometimes the honest answer is a referral for a surgical opinion, for example where there is a lot of bone loss, excess skin, or jowl drop that cosmetic medicine cannot address. Choosing not to go ahead is always a fair choice, and we will never push you. If something is not right for you, we will say so plainly.
Treatments We
May Discuss
The treatments listed here are examples of what may be considered. They are not a treatment plan and do not mean you will need all of them. Your recommendation may include one option, a combination, or a different approach altogether after your skin has been properly assessed at our Brisbane clinic.
Lower Face Volume Support
Support added along the jaw border, the jaw angle, and where the jawline meets the chin, to rebuild support underneath and bring the lower face into better balance. We plan it around a masculine or feminine shape, and around the features nearby. Whether it suits you, and which treatments, areas, and timing fit your anatomy, is decided at a full consultation.
Masseter Muscle Softening
Sometimes an enlarged masseter (the chewing muscle along the jaw angle) adds width to the lower face. Where that is part of your concern, we may work on the muscle to help balance the lower face and bring the jawline into better proportion. Whether it suits you, and the right approach for you, is decided at a full consultation.
Ultherapy
Focused ultrasound that reaches the deeper layers to support and firm the lower face and jawline. It may suit concerns about loose skin (skin laxity), a less defined jawline, or softening of the jaw-to-neck angle. This treatment needs its own consultation.
Aptos Thread Lifts
A less invasive lift that uses fine barbed threads to support and define the jawline and lower face. Dr Asadi is an Official Trainer for Aptos Threads.
Morpheus8
This combines radiofrequency energy with microneedling to help the skin firm and renew itself. It may suit loose skin (skin laxity), texture, or skin quality along the jawline and lower face.
All cosmetic procedures carry some risk and possible side effects. Whether a treatment suits you, what might rule it out, and the full range of possible complications are all discussed at your consultation. Individual results vary, and no outcome can be guaranteed. Frequently
Asked
Not always. A lot of loose skin, heavy jowls, or a jaw that sits well back may be better assessed by a plastic or oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Cosmetic medicine options can help with milder changes in the soft tissue, skin, or muscle, but they are not right for everyone. Whether they suit you is decided at your consultation.
A defined jawline depends on several layers: bone, fat, muscle, ligament, and skin. Each one changes over time at its own pace. The bone at the jaw angle slowly thins, the ligaments that hold things in place loosen, fat slips down over the jaw border, and the skin loses its stretch. Some jawline concerns are structural and run in families. Most age-related ones involve more than one of these layers. We assess both during your consultation.
For the right person, working on the jawline can help the lower face look more balanced, especially when we assess it alongside the chin, lips, and neck. The lower face is never read on its own. What is possible depends on your anatomy, and we talk it through at your consultation. Individual results vary.
It depends on the treatment, your own body, your lifestyle, and how quickly your face is changing. We will talk through how long to expect results to last at your consultation, based on the approach we are considering for you. Individual results vary.
Comfort is different for everyone, and it depends on the treatment. At Body Dezign House, we talk through how we keep you comfortable before anything is done, including numbing cream and gentle technique. If you feel anxious about procedures or find them painful, please tell us at your consultation so we can plan around it.
Mild loss of jawline definition, early jowls, extra width from the chewing muscle, or loose skin (skin laxity) along the jawline can all be good reasons for a jawline assessment. More marked bone or skin changes are usually referred for a surgical opinion. Whether you are suited depends on your anatomy, your medical history, and your goals, and is decided in person at your consultation.
All cosmetic procedures carry some risk. These can include bruising, swelling, unevenness, infection, problems with blood vessels, and a result you are not happy with. The specific risks depend on the treatment. We explain them in full at your Newstead Brisbane consultation, and again on the day. You can read more on our Risks & Complications page.

Dr Asadi and our team share an approach that is led by anatomy and never rushed. Every consultation looks at the lower face as a whole before any treatment is discussed.
