Understanding Face Slimming

About Dr Asadi
The lower face is never on its own. How wide it looks from the front comes from different things than how sharp it looks from the side. Both views are part of every assessment. How the masseter sits against the cheekbones, the chin and the neck is at the heart of any honest conversation about options.

Our approach is careful and honest. We look at what is really driving your concern. It might be a bulky or overactive masseter, the structure of the jaw bone, the soft tissue over the top, or a mix of these. We also look at whether any treatment is genuinely right for you.

Face Slimming Assessment

Areas Commonly
Assessed

A face slimming assessment at our Newstead clinic in Brisbane looks at a few parts of the lower face. We check how active the muscle is, how wide the structure is, and the soft tissue over the top. For many people it is a mix of all three.

Most Commonly Assessed

Masseter Muscle
& Lower Face Width

The masseter is the broad chewing muscle. It runs from your cheekbone down to the corner of your lower jaw. Its size, and how firm it stays at rest, is usually the biggest reason a lower face looks wide. We feel the muscle while you gently clench, checking its bulk, whether the two sides match, and how busy it is when you relax.

Jawline Shape
& Angle

The corner of the lower jaw can be softly rounded or quite square, and what suits a man and a woman is genuinely different here. We look at the shape of the jawline in three dimensions, against the whole lower face.

Lower Face
Symmetry

One side often sits wider than the other, usually the side you chew on most. We work out how much of that difference is muscle and how much is bone.

Clenching
& Grinding

Clenching and grinding, often during sleep, is called bruxism. It builds up the masseter the same way exercise builds any muscle. We check for tenderness, worn teeth, and a tight jaw in the morning.

Skin Quality
& Lower Face Laxity

Around and below the masseter, the firmness of your skin and its collagen support shape how clean the lower face looks. Easing muscle bulk works best when the skin over the top still has good support. Where there is some skin laxity, we may talk about tightening the skin as well as slimming the muscle. We look at both layers as part of the whole picture.

Cheek-to-Jaw
Balance

A slimmer jawline looks its best when the cheeks and chin are in balance too. We look at this alongside the masseter, the jawline, and the overall outline of the face.

Clinical Philosophy
The jaw looks broader from the front than it feels from the inside. What shows up as width in the lower face usually comes from three things: a masseter thickened by years of clenching, the bone beneath it, and the soft tissue that follows. A good consultation reads each layer on its own. And it is honest about what softening the muscle can change, and what is really a conversation about surgery.

Your consultation at our Brisbane clinic starts with a conversation about your concerns and what you would like to achieve. We review your medical history, carefully assess the lower face and jawline, and use VISIA skin analysis where appropriate to gain a better understanding of your skin's condition. Options

Approaches

Treatments We
May Discuss

The treatments listed here are examples of what may be considered. They are not a treatment plan and do not mean you will need all of them. Your recommendation may include one option, a combination, or a different approach altogether after your lower face has been properly assessed at our Brisbane clinic.

Facial Sculpting

Lower Face Sculpting

If a bulky or overactive masseter is driving the width of your lower face, a treatment focused on the chewing muscle may be an option. This is only considered at a one-on-one consultation. We assess your anatomy, explain how the treatment works, and talk through the risks and what to expect. Whether it suits you, and which areas to focus on, is decided only at that full consultation.

Tissue Support & Lifting

Ultherapy

Focused ultrasound that reaches the deeper layers to support and tighten the lower face and jawline. It can help where skin laxity sits alongside muscle width, so a slimmer jaw looks more defined. This needs its own consultation.

Aptos Thread Lifts

A gentle lift that uses fine threads to support and refine the lower face and jawline. Dr Asadi is an Official Trainer for Aptos Threads.

Radiofrequency & Microneedling

Morpheus8

Pairs radiofrequency energy with microneedling to build new collagen and tighten the skin of the lower face. Worth discussing where skin laxity, texture, or definition matter alongside lower face width.

Vivace RF Microneedling

Radiofrequency microneedling that builds collagen and helps firm the skin across the lower face. It often comes up when the goal is to support the jaw shape after the masseter has been softened.

Skin Quality & Bio-Stimulation

Skin Boosters

Hydrating, skin-building treatments that improve the quality, firmness and glow of the skin across the lower face. They support a slimmer, refined jaw rather than creating it on their own.

Rejuran

A regenerative treatment that helps rebuild the quality and resilience of the skin. It is often useful where the skin around the lower face would benefit from strengthening alongside any shaping work.

PRP

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, uses a small sample of your own blood to encourage your natural collagen and repair. We may suggest it as a supportive option for overall skin quality in the lower face.

All cosmetic procedures carry some risk and possible side effects. Whether a treatment suits you, what might rule it out, and the full range of possible complications are all discussed at your consultation. Individual results vary, and no outcome can be guaranteed. Questions

Frequently
Asked

Three things usually work together here. The first is the masseter, the chewing muscle that runs from the cheekbone to the corner of the lower jaw. The second is the bone of the lower jaw itself. The third is the soft tissue over the top. When the masseter is naturally bulky, or has built up from clenching and grinding, the lower face can look wide, square, or heavy at the jaw. The width of the bone and where you carry fat also play a part. We assess all three at your consultation.

Often, yes, when the width comes mainly from the muscle. An in-clinic treatment may help soften an enlarged masseter over time, and whether it suits you is decided at a one-on-one consultation.

How long results last varies from person to person and depends on the treatment used, how active your muscle is, your metabolism, and habits like ongoing clenching or grinding. You keep them up with maintenance treatments, and we talk through what to expect at your consultation. Individual results vary.

Done well, face slimming works on the masseter without touching the muscles you smile and speak with. The chewing muscle is gently eased, not switched off, so most people chew normally the whole way through. Hard or chewy food may feel a little different in the first few weeks while the muscle settles. The risk of a changed smile or a tired jaw goes up with poor technique, so we talk this through in detail at your consultation.

It can. The masseter is one of the strongest muscles in the body, and when it is overactive, usually through clenching or grinding the teeth (bruxism), it puts heavy, repeated force through the teeth and jaw. Over time this can wear down enamel, chip, crack or fracture teeth, loosen or break existing dental work, and contribute to jaw ache, headaches, and tension around the jaw joint. The same overactivity can also build up the muscle and widen the lower face, which is why it often comes up during a face slimming assessment. Any tooth damage itself should be checked and treated by your dentist. At your consultation we assess how active the masseter is and talk through whether anything we offer is appropriate for you.

Face slimming may suit you if your lower face width comes from a bulky or overactive masseter, especially if you also clench or grind your teeth. The right answer depends on your anatomy, your medical history, and your goals. It is decided at a consultation, not online.

Every cosmetic procedure carries some risk. These can include bruising, swelling, a difference between the two sides, infection, problems with blood vessels, and a result you are not happy with. The exact risks depend on the treatment, and we explain them in full at your consultation and again on the day. You can read more on our Risks & Complications page.
