What is PRX-Plus, and why doesn’t it peel?
Thirty-three per cent is a serious concentration. Used as a straight peel it would turn your skin white within seconds and shed it for the best part of a week. PRX-Plus doesn’t do that, and the reason comes down to one word in the ingredient list.
- PRX-Plus doesn’t contain trichloroacetic acid. It contains the ammonium salt of it.
- The acid form cooks protein in the top layer of skin. That’s what makes skin turn white, and it’s what peels off afterwards.
- The salt form gets through that layer without cooking it. No white, nothing to shed.
- The acid prep used beforehand levels the skin surface and evens out its pH, so the product goes in at the same rate everywhere rather than biting hard in patches.
- It goes on the skin, not into it, and it’s usually a short course rather than one visit. Individual results vary.
The number that should worry you
Trichloroacetic acid at 33% is not a gentle ingredient. Used as a straight peel, it follows a predictable sequence. The skin turns white within seconds. It feels tight and sore for a day or two. Then it sheds over the following week.
That white is called frosting, and it is quite literally protein cooking. The acid denatures keratin in the top layer of skin. Denatured protein scatters light instead of letting it through, so it turns white, exactly the way egg white does when it hits a hot pan. The peeling that follows is just that damaged layer coming away.
So when a product says 33% and also promises no peeling, being sceptical is the right instinct. The explanation is real, though, and it’s worth understanding before you agree to anything.
It isn’t the acid. It’s the salt
PRX-Plus doesn’t contain trichloroacetic acid at all. It contains ammonium trichloroacetate, which is the ammonium salt of that acid.
That distinction does all the work, and it’s worth knowing what the acid form actually does. The reactive part of the molecule is its three chlorine atoms. They strip the shell of water away from keratin, and in a strongly acidic environment the protein clumps together and turns opaque. Cooked egg white is the usual comparison, and it’s a fair one.
In PRX-Plus the same trichloroacetate is delivered as an ammonium salt instead of as the free acid. The active part is still there and still reaches the dermis. What’s missing is the harshly acidic environment that would let it coagulate the surface on the way through.
No coagulation means no frosting. No frosting means there’s nothing sitting there dead, waiting to flake off.
Worth clearing up, because it’s a common mix-up even among people who use these products. The older member of this family, PRX-T33, does contain free 33% trichloroacetic acid, and it solves the same problem a different way: hydrogen peroxide moderates the acid so it can’t frost. PRX-Plus took a different route. It swapped the acid for its salt and replaced the hydrogen peroxide with homocysteic acid. Same destination, different chemistry, and the two are often described interchangeably when they shouldn’t be.
The step before it, which does more than clean
There’s a second reason, and most people skip past it because it looks like a cleanse.
Before the PRX-Plus goes on, the skin is wiped with a prep solution. It isn’t soap, and it isn’t hydrogen peroxide, which is a common assumption. It’s a blend of hydroxy acids: glycolic and lactic at around 5% each, with smaller amounts of lactobionic, citric and phytic acid.
Two things happen. The acids loosen the outermost horny layer and even out its thickness. And they bring the whole surface to one consistent pH.
That matters far more than it sounds. Skin isn’t uniform. The surface layer is thicker over some areas than others, and an acid meeting a thin patch behaves differently from the same acid meeting a thick one. That unevenness is exactly how a conventional peel produces patchy frosting and hot spots. Levelling the surface first means the product goes in at the same rate everywhere, with nowhere for it to bite harder than intended.
So the no-peel result isn’t a single trick. It’s the salt form doing the chemistry, and the prep making sure that chemistry behaves the same way across your whole face.
What each layer actually gets
The formula is built so that different ingredients do their work at different depths, which is the other half of why the surface stays intact. What follows is the manufacturer’s model of how it works rather than something independently established, so read it as the design intent.
- The surface. Citric acid softens keratin and loosens the dead cells sitting on top. This is the part you feel as smoother skin, and it’s gentle loosening rather than stripping.
- The epidermis. Homocysteic acid is the ingredient credited with turnover and brightening. It is described as acting on the pigment-producing cells, and it is the molecule that sets this formula apart from the older ones.
- The dermis. The trichloroacetate reaches the fibroblasts, the cells that make collagen. That’s the firmness side of it, and it’s the slowest part to show.
What the treatment is actually like
The prep solution goes on first, as above. Then the PRX-Plus is massaged in by hand, usually ten to twelve minutes for a face and around fifteen with the neck. It’s removed, and a moisturiser goes on.
During it you’ll feel tingling, warmth and some tightness. That’s expected. Afterwards, most people have mild tightness and a little redness that settles quickly, and some notice light flaking a few days later. Light flaking is not the same as peeling, and if you go looking for sheets of skin you won’t find them.
It’s normally done as a course rather than a single visit, typically around four sessions a couple of weeks apart. Effects tend to become more settled after three to five treatments.
Aftercare matters more than people expect. Sunscreen daily, keep the skin moisturised, and leave the scrubs, retinoids and exfoliating acids alone for a few days. Skip the sauna and hot yoga straight afterwards. Don’t pick at any flaking.
When the answer is no
- You have active eczema, dermatitis or a barrier that’s already struggling.
- You have broken skin, an open wound or recent sunburn in the area.
- You have an active infection or uncontrolled inflammatory acne.
- You have melasma and no realistic plan for sun protection. Melasma can worsen with irritation and UV, so this one needs proper assessment rather than enthusiasm.
- You’re hoping it will do a structural job. It works on skin quality. It won’t change your face shape or lift anything.
Risks, briefly but honestly
Expected: tingling and warmth during, then tightness, mild redness and sometimes light flaking for a few days.
Less common: more persistent redness or irritation in sensitive skin, a cold sore flaring up if you’re prone to them, and pigment darkening afterwards in skin that’s inclined that way, particularly without sun protection.

The honest position is that PRX-Plus is a skin quality treatment with a clever delivery trick, not a substitute for anything structural. It suits people who want brighter, smoother, firmer-feeling skin without a week of looking like they’ve had something done.
What I want to know first is what’s actually causing the dullness or unevenness you don’t like, because the answer changes the plan. Pigment driven by sun damage behaves differently from melasma, and melasma is the one that punishes an over-enthusiastic approach.
