Acne affects over 85% of Australians at some stage of their lives making it one of the most common skin conditions. It’s mainly seen through puberty and located on the face, back and chest. In our skin, we have little pockets called follicles.
The correlation between acne and adolescence is due to increased testosterone production in both genders during puberty. Once filled with oil, dirt and dead skin cells our skin overproduces natural oils (sebum).
When bacteria mixes with sebum, our follicles become blocked and inflamed. This can lead to the development of papules and pustules.
Acne can also be the result of psychological factors such as increased stress levels, genetics and dietary habits.
